Biography

Marty W. Smith was born and raised in the great state of Georgia, where his family has deep roots in the Carroll County community. Throughout his life and career, Marty has been committed to fostering relationships and consensus building.

In the early stages of his career, Marty worked for his family’s grading contractor company, through which he was exposed to the fundamentals of small business practice and uncovered essential knowledge concerning site-selection, land acquisition, and site development for big-box stores. Marty learned important leasing skills as an ICSC member; he worked with shadow space retailers and outparcel tenants to secure site opportunities. Marty’s passion for natural resources drove him to receive his certification in wetlands design and mitigation through Auburn University’s Cooperative Extension System.

In 2013, Marty was elected to serve as chairman of the Carroll County Board of Commissioners. During his seven-year tenure, he collaborated with staff and local officials to substantially upgrade the county’s comprehensive land-use maps and zoning regulations.

Marty is an alumnus of Carrollton City Schools and The University of West Georgia, where he earned a Bachelors of Business Administration in Management in 1987. He enjoys hunting, fishing, and playing pickle ball in his free time. He currently lives in Carrollton, Georgia with his wife, Pam; together they are proud parents of three children and have recently welcomed their first grandchild.
